Community gardeners are invited to help tidy up, make repairs, fix signs, spread compost, prepare beds and plant seeds as we re-connect and kick off the season. 2012 West End Seedy Saturday

Saturday, March 24th, 11am to 4pm

Greenest City, the West End Food Co-op, Parkdale CHC, Stonegate CHC, Queen West CHC and the City of Toronto are all ‘seeding together’ to host our very own Seedy Saturday event to kick off the 2012 garden season. Local gardeners will have the chance to come together to share tea and to participate in a seed exchange and gardening workshops. Child and youth activities will also be available along with unique seed sellers and tasty local treats for sale.

Kids in the Kitchen — a special March break cooking session for Parkdale children in grades 3-6

Live in Parkdale and looking for activities for your child during March break? Send your child (grade 3-6) to prepare and eat a meal in a supervised, hands-on program at Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre. As a group, we’ll cook a tasty healthy meal, eat together, and have fun!

2011 Earth, Food and Culture Festival

It's time for the fall harvest, and that means it's time to celebrate! Drop by the park on September 24th to check out this year's festival. It will be an afternoon of food, fun and family-friendly activities, including a bike tune up and minor repair clinic with Bicycle Commons and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

2011 Garden Workparties

Greenest City Calendar 2011

Presenting … Greenest City’s Calendar 2011!

It’s an annual tradition of ours to share all the stories with the vibrant and colourful pictures of garden and the gardener and a way for us to cherish what we’ve accomplished in the year.

Featuring beautiful pictures of the people and work of Greenest City, the calendar is a perfect gift for you,to your family and friends as we near the holiday season.

The calendar includes all the important Canadian and multicultural holidays, as well as the different lunar phases, daylight saving time days, environmental dates, among other things. There is enough spaces in the boxes to write down the your notes. The design is crisp and simple, and we look forward to get your feedback on the calendar when you hold one in your hand.

The year 2011 promises a whole lot of new exciting programs for all age groups and more beautiful stories for Greenest City. Your purchase of this calendar and support will help us continue our work and find new ways into expanding our scope and reaching out to more people.

Garden Workparties

As fall settles and the days shorten, we are changing our hours in the garden—starting in September, we’ll only be out in the garden until 7. Leslie will be there to help you with harvesting questions and seeds for crops you can still plant for fall.

The last Children’s program will be Wednesday, August 25. Bring your kids out for fun learning in the garden and baking zucchini muffins with Tenzin before the busy school days start again. Last Garden Potluck of the Season

Our gardeners have made some of the most delicious and diverse food for the potlucks this year: ratatouille, coconut fried rice, tasty salads with beans, quinoa and veggies straight from the ground, sticky rice with caramel dipping sauce, lumpia, chocolate zuchinni muffins, and home-baked pies to name a few favourites.

We’d love to taste your diverse specialties one more time this season. Bring your favourite dish to share or scramble up a little something with your fall harvest. Corn Picking Field Trip

We are going on a fieldtrip to Farintosh Farm to pick Corn! The corn are $2.50 per dozen and there is no entrance fee.

Bring your own lunch and some water. An umbrella/rain jacket in case it rains and a hat and sunscreen if it is sunny.

Paper Making Workshop

Come and join Sketch and Greenest City’s Community Artist, Catherine Campbell to make paper.

Create your own decorative paper with recyclable materials. Make your own “Seeded Blessings” paper—to plant in your garden or to give as a gift….

Herbal and Medicinal Salve Making Workshop

Come and sip some herbal teas while you learn about how common weeds and herbs in your garden can help you feel good. We will learn about tisanes, tinctures, compresses and make a soothing salve for you to take home.

Potluck in the Park

Come join us for the second potluck of the season! Bring your favourite dish to share with your neighbours and friends. We will be joined by the Stonegate community, so let’s show them what Parkdale can cook up! The Youth Green Squad will also be joining us and cooking us a fabulous meal harvested from their garden. Make sure to bring your own non-disposable dishes and cutlery. We will have dishwashing stations, but please wash your own dishes!

Cherry Picking Field Trip

$10 – discount and bulk rate of orders of 5 calendars or more. This is our recession rate for those who may not be able to afford the regular price. Please be aware that if you buy less than 5 calendars at the discounted rate, we will not be able to ship it to your address. At this rate, we will be turning a loss if we pay for the shipping, so please just come and get it from our office. If you buy 5 or more calendars, you will get the bulk rate. You are more than welcome to stick with the regular rate if you want to.

Parkdale Food, Earth and Culture Festival

Sunday, Sept 27, 12 noon – 4 pm
Masaryk Park, 220 Cowan Ave

Come celebrate Parkdale, healthy food and the environment with Greenest City. Featuring a variety of musical performances: Baro Dununba (African drummers), Mario "the Voyce" Murray (hiphop), Tibetan youth cultural performance, among others. We will serve food prepared by local restaurants using local produce from farmers' market. We'll even have a farmers' market for you to buy local produce from!

Other features include: arts + crafts activities, children's games, eco workshop, bike tune-ups and a Shiatsu massage tent.

All of the activities above are free of charge. We only ask a minimum donation of $2 for a plate of our delectable dish. So please join us.
