Since 2007, Greenest City has been working with a local ‘English as a Second Language’ (ESL) instructor to engage students in our outdoor classroom. Over the years, the outdoor teaching model became increasingly popular among the ESL students. It has increased the participant’s English literacy as well as on topics such as: healthy eating habits, the Canadian nutrition guide, and most of all gardening techniques to use in Canada.
Many of the participants have newly immigrated into Canada from extremely different climates and temperatures. Many of them have indicated that a big part of their lives were spent in the fields and gardens in their home territory, and they have appreciated the time our team has taken to demonstrate how growing can be done here in Canada.
Not only does the outdoor classroom add to the students’ educational experience, it also means they are growing fresh vegetables they can then bring home to their families.
